Linux Advantages

There is a reason why many of the big companies have been supporting Linux solutions and using them too.

They have long been enjoying the low cost of ownership, security and reliability that Linux provides.

Some of the advantages include:

Apache Web Server - all systems come with Apache web server pre installed. Famous with web developers world wide and known for its speed reliability and security, we can tailor your Apache options to meet the needs of SQL, Postgres SQL, PHP and many other industry standard add ons.

Certificates - purchased from outside sources such as Thawte and Entrust can easily be installed to your Linux Server to assure further security for outside Users, secure communications with other outside servers or even setup e-commerce.

Cost of Ownership -  We build these using Dell Business Class equipment and have machines starting @ $ 900.00 with next day on site hardware support from Dell. All of the system tasks are automated, we need only monitor logs. This is done via e-mail from the server itself. If something is wrong physically or with configuration, e-mail alerts are sent (this is rare). Any business owner who has owned a Red Hat server will tell you they are extremely low maintenance. Licensing is free but you can buy the full support package from Red Hat should you feel the need for extra.

E-Mail - Accounts sizes are now within your control and limited only by the amount of disk space on the server. You can create as many @your.com emails as you like and they take effect immediately.

Exchange Protection - A Linux or Untangle server can easily be configured to cleanse all spam, viruses and bad traffic, then pass all incoming mail to your existing Exchange 2000/2003 Server. This takes a big load off your existing server thus saving $$ on new equipment.

Firewall - The Linux Server in front of your Exchange will also protect it with an extremely secure firewall (built in). The firewall logs all attempts to gain access to your network. I have seen logs with as many as 78,000 attempts in a 24 hour period! You would be surprised how common hacking is, well just look at the SPAM out of control, how do you think they send it?

Privacy & Security - Your outgoing and incoming mail resides on your server in your office. Most ISP’s forward all your mail to servers outside of their own companies, often in other countries!!! If privacy and mail security is important then your mail should be coming only to and from your own server in your own building.

Reliability - We build reliable inexpensive Linux Red Hat servers. They are extremely low maintenance, run very fast on inexpensive equipment and rarely require Tech attention. There is an enormous amount of support available. These are some of the reasons that companies like RIM use Linux for most of their mail.

SPAM Control - We install SPAM ASSASSIN which cleanses all of the incoming mail and tags it with {spam?) in the subject line. The mail can be filtered in your Outlook or Exchange mailbox so that if a mail is missing you need only look in that folder. Spam Assassin blocks thousands of servers know to be spammers from ever connecting to your mail and logs them.

Troubleshooting - With your own mail server in place, troubleshooting is a breeze.

If requested, logs can easily be examined from a secure remote shell determining exactly why an E Mail is disappearing.

Since Linux logs everything including hardware temperatures, fan speeds, serial numbers and anything in the way of network traffic, finding the problem whether hardware, network or mail is always just a matter of reading the logs. (Generally these alerts are mailed to you before they become a big problem.)

This proves to be a far more effient and truly proactive approach, resulting in far less “techie crisis”.
