Stopping the “Make Work” Project in Technical Support Computer-Slowdowns

Install Spybot.

It is Free (Though they do rely on donations for those that can), and has been working exceptionally well for years.

I do not recommend installing the Tea Timer, as most Users find it invasive as it will pop up every time a program is run. Tea Timer is great if you suspect your machine is infected, and can easily be turned on and off.

Even if you have an anti-virus Spybot Search and Destroy will find Internet Sludge in the form of temp files that you had no idea were there.

AVG For Free. Ok choice for home Users I suppose, but in the corporate world I find nothing beats Kaspersky for cost and effectiveness. You do get what you pay for.

We have seen way too many networks crippled by Spyware and Virus’ when protected by lower cost products such as Trend. While they do catch some Spyware and virus, In my opinion they tend to leave networks requiring more IT Support and experiencing more downtime.

Disable System Restore!

System restore keeps a copy of your last known Windows configuration in case you need to roll back to a previous driver or state of Windows. Problem is Virus people have been counting on that a long time. Your tech may fix your computer, but down the road you do a system restore and bang your virus’ are back. It was a good idea on paper I am sure, but it is part of the whole make-work project and I turn it off on all client machines. It is not a backup anyway, if your hard drive fails, the restores go with it.
