Router-Firewall-Security

Home users should always have some type of hardware firewall device plugged in to their DSL or cable modem. This will stop some traffic (not all) from attacking your Windows PC when on line. Home routers such as DLink, Netgear and Linksys offer an inexpensive and moderately secure solution for home Windows users.

It is very important to make sure that the device you buy is properly configured and that means making sure you read the manual that came with it. All router/ firewall devices should have an Administrator and User password set within the device and this should be something secure (not your phone number or dog’s name).

This having been said, these same router/ firewalls are NOT appropriate hardware for a business network with more than 3 PC’s.

I have tested many models of these devices and have found that when you have more than 3 PC’s using one, there is measurable packet loss. This means that your network/ Internet connection can actually be slowed down dramatically by the device. (Let’s keep in mind they were designed for home users).

These devices can also be hacked and “drilled through” by someone who really knows what they are doing. I urge you to do some research on your own.

If your router/ firewall has to be reset on a regular basis than you can bet it is either being “slammed” with traffic or worse, someone has already hacked their way in and is causing it to lock up.

Think about the cost of all the business PC’s. servers. switches and even wiring in your network. You don’t want a home router as your primary network security guardian.

Business network security should be approached with a completely different model and can be done very cost effectively and reliably using Cisco products or a properly configured Linux firewall server. Logs on any corporate firewall should be monitored no matter what device you are using.

Do you have an alarm system in your office? Ok, then why does it make sense to ignore the back door in to your office and your data?

Think about it.
